How could I possibly write Good News Sundays without talking about the champion that is Leonardo DiCaprio? That’s right, I couldn’t. He’s sharing the spotlight this week with an exciting medicinal breakthrough and the purchase of an entire dog shelter…
Let’s get happy!
When researches began counting the population of orangutans in Sumatra, it was thought that there were only about 6,600 still inhabiting the jungle. This was due to logging and poaching, which caused a rapid decline in the number of orangutans in the area. After the count had started, however, new nests were found in new and higher locations, bringing the new number up to 14,600. This is a huge leap, and incredible news for this special species.
Scientists believe they’ve found a way to track a tumour’s surface proteins, which is what can lead to a cancerous mutation. This is leading to a potential vaccine, which they are hoping will be ready for testing within two years. This vaccine would act as a kind of “booster shot”, using immune cells taken during a biopsy which would then be multiplied and re-administered to the patient. Exciting stuff!
The founder of Dog Tales Rescue and Sanctuary in Canada, Danielle Eden, is obviously a huge dog lover. She’s visited a huge number of dog shelters around the world, but one that really hit her hard was in Israel. More than 250 dogs were housed in a space intended for only 70, and they spent their time fighting over food and living with rats. It was too difficult for Danielle to find just a few dogs to take back to Dog Tales, so she bought them all. 90 have since been re-homed within Israel, and 25 have been taken to Canada. Danielle is working on moving the rest to Canada in order to find them their forever homes.
I’m sure you’ve all heard by now that Leonardo DiCaprio has – finally! – won an Oscar for his role in The Revenant (which is an incredible movie, so check it out if you haven’t already!). Naturally, everyone is celebrating, and the Internet is saying farewell to all the Leo-without-his-Oscar memes. The standout moment, though, was his speech, which he used to call for much-needed global action on climate change. Check out the video of his speech above.
Since meeting each other through kid’s TV show Big Blue Marble where they both requested a pen pal, Sandi Fisher and Beth Graham have written to each other consistently for 38 years. It started as snail mail letters (remember those?) back and forth, and recently they’ve moved on to email and Facebook to keep in touch. They’ve had a few short conversations on the phone, but as they lived far apart (Sandi in Colorado and Beth in Pennsylvania), the long-distance was too expensive. Finally however, after all this time, Sandi made the trip to see Beth, and they got to meet each other face-to-face for the first time ever. Check out the video here.
