Hello and welcome back to DIY Tuesdays! Hoorah!
This week, I’m decorating a mug. It seems like every time I’m on Pinterest, I come across a tutorial for a Sharpie mug. I’ve always been skeptical about how well the Sharpie will stay on the cup or mug, even when cooked, so I decided to use a no-fail method and invested in a porcelain pen (in the ‘equipment’ section below, you can find an Amazon link to the exact one I used). Want to see how my mug decorating turned out? Read on…
– Porcelain mug
– Porcelain pen
It honestly couldn’t be easier. If it’s your first time using your porcelain pen, you’ll probably have to press the nib of the pen down until the ink runs in to the tip. Once you’re ink (and inspiration I hope!) is flowing, channel your inner Renoir and get scribbling!
My pattern is really quite basic, just some little flowers. My number one tip at this stage is to be careful how you hold your cup: the ink will be very wet, and I made the mistake of touching one of the flowers on my design… yikes!
Now comes the wait. The instructions on my pen told me to wait for 24 hours for the design to dry before moving on to the next step (if you want it touch-dry and don’t plan on washing it in the dishwasher, leave it to air dry for 72 hours before using).
Fast-forward 24 hours annnnd…
Now comes the baking in the oven! This will properly set the design and make it dishwasher safe! Bake at 150 degrees Celsius for about 35 minutes. Be super careful when removing your mug from the oven – it’ll be hot!
Leave to cool and there you have it – a freakin’ adorable decorated mug. How easy was that!? There are all sorts of colours of porcelain pens out there, and I’ve found the Pēbēo brand that I used to have some amazing colours – I can’t wait to try them all out! This being said, the possibilities are endless. It’s up to you how intricate and artistic you want your designs to be – I’m slightly lacking in artistic skills, so I stuck to some simple flowers!
…I’m drinking a cup of tea out of my cute new mug as we speak (or should I say, as I type).
As always, if there’s a DIY project that you’re dying to test out but don’t know how it’ll turn out… let me find out for you! Just leave a suggestion and link to a project and I’ll be your guinea pig. See you back here next week for DIY Tuesdays!
