It’s been two months since I last posted anything from Ramblings of a Fake Redhead. This was not my intention. All I can put my absence down to is the dreaded two words that everyone warned me about: blogger burnout.
It happens after about a year, they said. You’ll be doing fine, your blog will be growing steadily, and writing will come naturally to you. And then you stop. You’ll start again, they reassured me, but it’ll take a month or so, and you’ll feel bad about leaving. The best thing you can do, though, is start again.
Why blogger burnout happens and why it’s such a predictable cycle, I’m not entirely sure. It’s like you wake up one morning, sit down with a fresh cuppa, open up a ‘new post’ tab, and your brain just goes “nope.” All of the drive and inspiration you had is still there, you just can’t summon the energy to actually do anything with it.
All I can say about the experience of blogger burnout is that it happened, and while now the thought of trying to catch up is daunting, I’m back.
I’m nearly marking a year of Ramblings, and I’m so proud of that. This blog has become my baby, and I simply can’t give it up. In fact, my return was fuelled by an email from my hosting company: “your service is due to expire – do you wish to renew?” Well, I renewed. Writing this blog and reading all the amazing comments and feedback from you all, making friends and learning so much is the reason I got in to blogging. I’m not letting that go. This is what I want to do.
For now, I’ll see you very soon. I’m picking up all of my old regular columns, and I’m sparking up some new ones. I can’t wait to show you what Ramblings has in store.
The best thing you can do is start again.
